Dr. Kai Yao, a leading researcher in the areas of Uncertainty Quantification in Civil Engineering with particular emphasis on geotechnical structures, from Shandong University, has been awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. He will join the Institute for Risk and Reliability, Leibniz Universität Hannover, to collaborate with our team on a novel approach for sinkhole risk assessment as a basis for informed decision-making with respect to operating parameters in underground construction. The envisaged research will involve a combination of big data analysis and physical understanding of the mechanistic causes of the sinkholes.
