The performance is evaluated in detail in the various disciplines based on the DFG's subject classification system. Geodesy and geoinformatics is represented in Group 315 “Geophysics and Geodesy” (GPG). As the field of “Geophysics” is not represented at Leibniz University, all approved funds are allocated to geodesy and geoinformatics.
Leibniz University Hannover also did very well in the discipline of “Civil Engineering and Architecture”, coming in 6th place with 10.8 million euros in approved funding.
Overall, Leibniz University Hannover is among Germany's top universities in terms of funding, with a total of 187 million euros in third-party funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the years 2020 to 2022. LUH is very strong in the engineering sciences (seventh place) and the natural sciences (twelfth place). If the DFG funding is looked at in relation to the number of professors, LUH ranks second in Germany in the engineering sciences, directly behind RWTH Aachen.
The DFG is one of the most important sources of research funding at German universities. Referred to as third-party funding, such external funding sources exist alongside state budgets.
